“Since you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren, fervently love one another from the heart, for you have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and enduring word of God. For, ‘All flesh is like grass, and all its glory like the flower of the grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls off, but the word of the Lord endures forever.’ And this is the word which was preached to you.” (1 Peter 1:22-25)

Before I get into the word study, something I only just noticed when I read this verse here tonight – it says to fervently love one another from the heart, FOR you have been born again…the only way we can truly love one another from the heart and the way God asks us to, is if we are born again, by His incorruptible seed, the living and enduring word of God! Jesus prayed in John 17 that the world would know that we are His disciples by the love we have for each other. If we are born again, His love is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit within us, (Rom 5:5) making it therefore possible to love the way Gods asks us to.

The word I want to study here is “word.” But the word of the Lord endures forever.

When I was 15 I saw this verse in a dream, a week after I became born again. I looked up the verse and there it was, exactly as in my dream. That was an amazing experience to know that God had actually given me a dream guiding me to a very important scripture He wanted me to know. I realised for the first time in my life, that God really does speak to us, and that His word is not just a book, but it’s alive.

The word for “word” here is rhema – Strong’s 4487. This is the definition: a thing spoken, (a) a word or saying of any kind, as command, report, promise, (b) a thing, matter, business.

It’s a spoken word. When someone speaks, the person speaking is alive, correct? No one who is dead can talk to you. So the rhema word of the Lord is God speaking to you, and He is speaking to you because he is firstly alive and He is able, and secondly, because He wants to communicate with you!

What I also noticed from this definition are the words “report,” and “promise.”

I’ve been learning about the power of testimony lately. When someone gives their testimony, they are giving you a “report” about what God did in his/her life. So the rhema word of God can speak to you through someone’s testimony, or report! He speaks through someone’s report and builds your faith, that the same thing that happened to them can happen to you! The rhema word of God can happen when you’re listening to the promises of God given through the prophetic also, and just simply reading His word, which are full of “reports” and “promises.”

What does Romans 10:17 say? “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word (rhema) of Christ.” (NASB) That’s right, it’s the same word, rhema. For faith to come, we must hear the word as spoken by Christ Himself, what we call revelation. It’s a “now” word! When you hear it, the word jumps inside you and your heart burns within you!

Remember what the disciples said to each other in the account of the Road to Emmaus? After Jesus disappeared from them, they said to one another, “didn’t our hearts burn within us as He talked with us on the road?” You can find the account in Luke 24:13-35.

When Jesus, the living Word, the Word made flesh, speaks to you, your heart will burn within you! Jesus said in John 6:63 that “the words that I have spoken to you are spirit and are life.” When Jesus speaks to you, it is spiritual, and full of life, and can only produce life!

Are you sick of dead religion? Dead religion has no life because no one is hearing the rhema word of the living Christ! Once you hear Him, you will never be the same! Christianity won’t be boring anymore, because you will have heard His living Word inside you and He will become real to you!

Do you want Jesus to become real to you? It’s through receiving rhema into your heart – Jesus often said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.” We may hear naturally, but when we hear the rhema word, we hear with our spiritual ears and then we truly understand what the Spirit is saying. Otherwise we don’t get a thing about what the God is saying through the Bible.

When you read the Bible today, ask the Holy Spirit to show you what He is saying, and ask Him for a rhema word…because God really wants to speak to you and “show you great and mighty things you do not know.” (Jer 33:3)
